The Carriage House
Allegheny West National Register Historic District
712 Rope Way, Pittsburgh PA 15233
The Carriage House is proof that even support structures deserve a second life. Located on Rope Way in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny West neighborhood, this three-story, 2,840-square-foot residence was originally built to support the Willock estate. Its structure reflects the craftsmanship and hierarchy of late-19th-century urban mansions.
Like the main house, the Carriage House eventually fell into disuse and faced an uncertain future. Through thoughtful and adaptive work, Q Development was able to preserve its historic character while introducing modern living amenities so it could be reborn as a private residence.
Today, the Carriage House functions independently even as it remains architecturally tied to the original estate.
Fun Facts:
- Built seven years after the Willock House, the Carriage House now functions as a standalone single-family home.
- It has the only postal address on Rope Way. The street name commemorates the Irwin family’s 18th and 19th century rope-making business.
