Bayard School Lofts
Upper Lawrenceville
4836 Hatfield Street, Pittsburgh PA 15201
Bayard School Lofts shows how Pittsburgh’s historic buildings can be reimagined for modern life. Located in Central Lawrenceville, the building served the neighborhood’s students from 1874 to 1938 as Washington Public School No. 3 (later renamed Bayard School after landowner George A. Bayard). Afterward, it was used for food processing and other industrial purposes before becoming vacant in the 1990s.
After decades of disuse, the structure was thoughtfully rehabilitated and transformed into a boutique residential community by Q Development.
Our redevelopment introduced contemporary living spaces defined by the building’s historic character, most notably by preserving its large windows, high ceilings, and wide schoolhouse corridors. Once a place of learning, Bayard School Lofts continues the building’s story as a place designed for modern residential living.
Fun Facts:
- Reclaimed school chalkboards re-envisioned by the local artisans at Naked Geometry are installed outside every apartment door.
- During construction, a neighborhood resident stopped by to reminisce about attending school in the building during the 1930s.
